| Curriculum Vitae: | - Born in Kettwig, Germany, 6 August 1957
- 1976 – 1981: Studying economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Diplom degree (corresponding M.A. in Freiburg)
- 1982 – 1985: Doctoral studies in economics in Freiburg and at Nagoya University, Japan; doctoral thesis on structural change in the declining Japanese textile industry (summa cum laude; Freiburg)
- 1984 – 1991: Research Assistant, from 1986 as Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Economics, Freiburg University; 1986-87 on leave to Nagoya University, Japan, and to the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore
- 1991: Advanced doctoral degree (Habilitation) in economics (Freiburg); thesis on outward-oriented industrialisation in Pacific Asia
- Since 1992: Full Professor of East Asian Economic Studies at Duisburg University (now: Duisburg-Essen University, Germany); assigned to the Department of Business Studies and to the (university-level) Institute of East Asian Studies
